Our Purpose

Our purpose is the commitment to the prevention of drowning and injury at our beach, through the provision of lifeguarding, water safety and education services. Primarily we do this through the provision of patrols and the marking the safest swimming area between two red and yellow flags.

OBK Surf Lifeguards are trained to handle most conditions at our beach and are extremely competent at performing rescues in the surf and in the lagoon.
Surf life Saving differs from nearly every other rescue service by the fact that we proactively patrol rather than react. Most of the work that we do is preventative, warning people of danger.

Surf Sports is an integral part of OBK

Encompassing all different disciplines, we have a comprehensive framework of training and support for everyone from kids competing in Junior Surf through to adults and masters.

Athletes from age 7-13 participate in the Junior Surf programme. Once an athlete has turned 14 and attained their Surf Lifeguard Award they can then compete at Surf Sports Events in the age groups of Under 16, Under 19 and Open. Competition provides an environment for surf lifeguards, coaches, team managers and officials to develop through opportunities such as courses, seminars, camps and tours.

Surf Sports offer a prime training ground for the physical and psychological demands of saving lives in the surf. Junior Surf members, as young as seven get to enjoy the fun and excitement of pitting themselves against each other. Regardless of ability or interest, events range from Club based competitions to District and National U14 Championships.
